ANIMAL FARM

ANIMAL FARM by George Orwell 144 pp. Penguin Group. £8.99. (Ages 13 and up) ISBN 9780141182704 Rating: ? Stars     This book is set in a future when animals are much cleverer than now. And because of their cleverness, the pigs started a revolution against the humans. Pigs could speak fluently in English unlike the other animals, and that gave them the power to be leaders. But, the story that follows only happened a few years after that...     Their first leader, Old Major, was kind and fair who knew animals should be equal. But when Napoleon became the leader it was very unpleasant. He made a rule that allowed the pigs to have better food and that forced all of the other animals to work crazily hard every day and night. That wasn’t enough, Napoleon wanted more power.     He decided to kill his brother, Snowball, so that he would be the only leader. Snowball was admired because he came up with a clever idea to build windmill. Sn...

2012 At A Glance

On a personal note 2012 has been a big year for me- I finished my undergrad (a B.A. in bioarchaeology anthropology), I started grad school (a Masters of Library and Information Science), I finished the first draft of the WIP I have been working on since summer '11 (and I edited two-thirds of it), I adopted out ~35 kittens in the summer (and only kept 2 for myself! ;) ), and I saw my little sister get engaged. However, on a blogging-note (number-wise) 2012 hasn't been quite as big of a year as I would have liked- I only managed to read 112 books this year (whereas last year I had read 137). Of those 112 books I reviewed a mere 88. Unfortunately real life got in the way of reading/ blogging many a'time (especially around exam time and grad school app time). But... Those 88 books review brings my blog's grand total to 223 books read and reviewed . Not two bad in a little over 2 years time, in my opinion. However, on a personal blogging-note it was also a big year- I made s...

Book Review: The Fairy-Tale Detectives

For Sabrina and Daphne Grimm, life has not been a fairy tale. After the mysterious disappearance of their parents, the sisters are sent to live with their grandmother--a woman they believed was dead! Granny Relda reveals that the girls have two famous ancestors, the Brothers Grimm, whose classic book of fairy tales is actually a collection of case files of magical mischief. Now the girls must take on the family responsibility of being fairy tale detectives. I think The Fairy-Tale Detectives may be my favorite middle grade book I've read this year. The world Michael Buckley created is so much fun and filled with so many of my favorite fairy tale characters. Sabrina, and her little sister, Daphne, are sent to live with their Granny Relda, after their parents' disappear. Daphne is thrilled to finally get to meet her grandmother, but Sabrina is not to be fooled. The girls were told that their grandmother had passed on. Sabrina wants nothing more than to escape. After much convinci...

Guest Post: Author Juliana Haygert

Today I am excited to have Juliana Haygert, author of "Her Heart's Secret Wish", stop by the blog to tell us a bit about her writing process!  Like most writers, I started writing at an early age. But then it was just a hobby. During college, I stopped writing. Not sure why, though. Too busy? Even though I wasn’t writing anymore, my mind never stopped creating stories and making observations “ah, this would be an awesome detail for a story” and things like that. Around 2008, the urge to write again was overwhelming. I started writing again, and I started thinking about it as more than a hobby. For the first time, I thought about trying to get published. While I wasn’t writing my first real manuscript, as I call it, I researched about the process, the agents, the editors, the wants and wishes, all of that dance. Early into 2010, I finish my first real manuscript and submitted to agents. I’m serious. Man, I hope they don’t remember me. The writing was horrible. Horrible! Ye...

Book Review: Skulduggery Pleasant

Meet Skulduggery Pleasant Ace Detective Snappy Dresser Razor-tongued Wit Crackerjack Sorcerer and Walking, Talking, Fire-throwing Skeleton --as well as ally, protector, and mentor of Stephanie Edgley, a very unusual and darkly talented twelve-year-old. These two alone must defeat an all-consuming ancient evil. The end of the world? Over his dead body. I scored a set of Skulduggery Pleasant by Derek Landy at a used book store a few years ago. As so many books do, they sat on my shelf, unread. I finally read the first book and quite enjoyed it. I often find myself having difficulty getting into Middle Grade books. I have trouble relating to the characters. I'm thirty, so I'm old enough to be a mother of these 10-12 year old kids. It's a paranormal, action adventure. So every time poor Stephanie gets within sight of danger, I'm going "Why isn't her mother with her?" or "Go home where it's safe!" And that wouldn't be an exciting story. I thin...

Author Interview: Morgan Keyes

Today on the blog I have Morgan Keyes, author of Darkbeast , a middle grade fantasy, answering a few questions about her inspiration for her new novel. But first, check out the synopsis. A girl’s love for her raven may put her life in jeopardy in this gripping tale. In Keara’s world, every child has a darkbeast—a creature that takes dark emotions like anger, pride, and rebellion. Keara’s darkbeast is Caw, a raven, and Keara can be free of her worst feelings by transferring them to Caw. He is her constant companion, and they are magically bound to each other until Keara’s twelfth birthday. For on that day Keara must kill her darkbeast—that is the law. Refusing to kill a darkbeast is an offense to the gods, and such heresy is harshly punished by the feared Inquisitors. But Keara cannot imagine life without Caw. And she finds herself drawn to the Travelers, actors who tour the country performing revels. Keara is fascinated by their hints of a grand life beyond her tiny village. As her bir...

Top Ten Books I’m Looking Forward To in 2013

Today is the last week of one of my most favourite weeks in the book blogging community- the Top Ten lists of 2012! This year's Top Ten of 2012 is hosted by  Lisa from A Life Bound By Books ,  Jessica from Confessions of a Bookaholic ,  Jaime from Two Chicks on Books ,  Mindy from Magical Urban Fantasy Reads , and  Rachel from Fiktshun ! *In no particular order. Because... Seriously I don't know which I want more than the others* (Images property of owners) 1) "Isla and the Happily Ever After" by Stephanie Perkins: I love Stephanie Perkins, like, LOVE LOVE. I think that it's safe to say that I have a girl crush on her. Why? BECAUSE SHE CREATED BOTH CRICKET AND ETIENNE! So admittedly I have little idea what this book is about (and there is still no cover), but Ashley and I have BIG ideas (basically the above image- plus robots and each of the previous characters putting all of their various talents to use). 2) "The Indigo Spell" by Richelle Mead: With a...

*In no particular order* ( Image Credit ) 1. Jace Wayland from Cassie Clare's "City of Lost Souls": This is a given. I don't think that Jace will ever not top my list of book boyfriends. He is the epitome of YA book boys IMO. ( Image Credit ) 2. Adrian Ivashkov from "The Golden Lily" by Richelle Mead: I have been a Dimitri fan through and through, however, I have felt myself becoming more and more drawn to Adrian as Richelle's "Bloodlines" series develops more and more. Adrian made my heart a complete puddle with his confession in "The Golden Lily". ( Image credit ) 3. R from "Warm Bodies" by Isaa...

Top Ten Best Couples of 2012

Today is day three of my most favourite week of the book blogging community- the Top Ten lists of 2012! *In no particular order* 1) Adrian and Sydney from "The Golden Lily" by Richelle Mead: I never thought it possible for me to love characters from Richelle Mead more than I love Dimitri and Rose, however, with each installment of this series I am realizing that it is entirely possible. 2) Noah and Echo from "Pushing the Limits" by Katie McGarry: Broken girl and bad-boy. Could it get any more perfect than that? ( Image credit ) 3) Four and Tris from "Insurgent" by Veronica Roth: Bad-ass and bad-assier (and what is perhaps best about this coupling is that Tris, the female, is the bad-assier one). ( Image credit ) 4) Tamani and Lau...

Short Story Review: Dream Dark

When Link joined his best friend, Ethan Wate, on a quest through a mysterious network of underground passageways endlessly crisscrossing the South, he knew the journey would be dangerous. But returning home to Gatlin, South Carolina was just the beginning... Wounded during a climactic battle, Link discovers that tending his injuries won't be as simple as visiting a doctor and that healing his arm should be the least of his worries. For being bitten by a Supernatural does more than break the skin -- it changes a person, inside and out, turning Link into someone more and more like the dark creature who injured him. In this never-before-seen short story by   New York Times   bestselling authors Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl, readers witness Link's heart-racing transformation.   Dream Dark   is set before the much-anticipated third Beautiful Creatures novel,   Beautiful Chaos , and as a special bonus includes an exclusive sneak peek at the first five chapters. "Never Too Far" by Abbi Glines

Release Date: February 25, 2013 Publisher: Self-Pub From Goodreads:  "He had held a secret that destroyed her world.   Everything she had known was no longer true. Blaire couldn’t stop loving him but she knew she could never forgive him.  Now, she was back home and learning to live again. Moving on with life… until something happened to send her world spinning once again. What do you do when the one person you can never trust again is the one that you need to trust so desperately? You lie, hide, avoid, and pray that your sins never find you out." *Please note that while I have made all attempts to shield them, this book does contain a few spoilers. If you do intend to read this book do not read any further (unless you aren't bothered by them)* I am divided about this book- due to a number of seemingly contradictory elements that it possesses. On the one hand I loved how independent Blaire was, not only more than willing to raise her child on her own, but letting Rush go...

ARC Review: "Earthbound" by Aprilynne Pike

Release Date: July 30, 2013 Publisher: Razorbill Pages: 352 From Goodreads: "Love, fate, and power collide in this new series by #1 New York Timesbestselling author Aprilynne Pike! Tavia Michaels is the sole survivor of the plane crash that killed her parents. When she starts to see strange visions of a boy she’s never spoken with in real life, she begins to suspect that there’s much about her past that she isn’t being told. Tavia will soon discover that she’s an Earthbound—someone with the ability to create matter out of nothing—and that she alone holds the key to stopping the Reduciata, an evil society that manipulates global events for its own shadowy purposes. Tavia will ultimately have to make a choice: to come into her powers and save the world from the evil Reduciata or to choose free will and a love of her own." Admittedly I was quite hesitant to read this book- why? Because Aprilynne's "Wings" series is one of my most favourite series and I didn'...
